6 Mistakes to Avoid When Freezing Food

Eating poorly stored food can make you ill. Here are some of the common mistakes you need to avoid when you store a bunch of food in the freezer. 

Overloading

A stuffed freezer is just the opposite of what frozen foods require to remain good for as long as they’re in there. Thus, avoid filling up your freezer unnecessarily. If you really need to do some stocking up, consider coming up with a proper plan. A little organization and planning surely can make a big difference, and space!

Not Labelling Your Frozen Food

When you have a couple of different items frozen, it can be difficult to figure out what’s in each pack. This is why you would make it a point to label your bags and put the dates on, too, so you know exactly when they should be used before.

If, like many others, will be storing small packs of different stuff, you wouldn’t want to skip the labelling part at any cost. Again, make sure you get organized. Always have a bunch of freezer bags at home – there are various packs of reusable freezer bags in the market that should come in super handy. Label your packs and stack them neatly so it makes matter easy!

Freezing Large Chunks

Large chunk and pieces, of meat and fish in particular, take a long time to freeze. Experts’ advice that you cut up your meat, fish, and veggies evenly, into slices or cubes so they freeze properly and evenly.

Freezing Hot Food

One common mistake many tend to make is popping hot food into the freezer. Apparently, this can-do damage to both the food and the appliance. As for the freezer, it will need to work hard to bring down the temperature at once, which isn’t a good thing, technically. This in turn, isn’t the healthiest process your food will get subject to. Thus, always wait until the food is at room temperature before it can get sealed and then go in the freezer. 

Opening the Freezer Door Frequently

The freezer door is not meant to be opened unless you really will be taking stuff out from it. Frequent opening of the fridge door apparently, is one of the most common causes of Issues such as ice build-up and other technical problems.

Opening the door means you allow warm air inside, which isn’t a good thing for the (food) contents of the freezer, either. As mentioned previously, consider organizing the contents in the freezer. This should help you grab what you want in a second and avoid leaving the door open for too long. 

Not Inspecting Your Freezer

One of the things you’d want to check often are the fridge seals. If they do not seal properly, they let in warm air from the outside which basically means that your food won’t freeze properly. Broken or poor seals can also affect the performance of the appliance which can eventually lead to technical issues, even damage. Thus, never fail to check on the seals every once in a while, even if there is no real reason why they’d wear out or break.
